Aiding the farmers and societies (In Karnataka Village)

Life in Kadrolli village is difficult. People have to travel a distance of 32 km for basic medical treatment and hospitalization as no medical aid is available in the village. For pre-university & college education, students have to travel daily to a distance of around 64 kms. Women are either illiterate or educated to a level of primary education.

The farmers' main livelihood is from agriculture only. Rearing of cows and buffaloes is common in the village and this takes care of family's petty daily expenses. Thus, In a village where children need to walk 7 km to the nearest school and the sick have to be taken 32 km for even the most rudimentary treatment, the Fairtrade premium has come as a welcome boon. The farmers' business acumen is apparent in their decision to spend first, a portion of the premium, on work – on procuring organic fertilizers for their farms.

For fair-trade certification, the farmers have been formed into societies in which there is no discrimination on grounds of religion/caste/sex etc. All people live in harmony in the village and for taking up developmental activities in the village everyone works together. They celebrate festivals and fairs in the village collectively irrespective of their religious beliefs. It is interesting to see people living together and enjoying life within the available resources. Fairtrade is changing the lives of these farmers.

With six more village societies slated to get Fairtrade certified, Pure Life plans to help as many more farmers as possible.
